One-of-a-kind
LoribaftHand KnottedWool rug
Dark red / Brown158 x 232 cm

Loribaft - A Vibrant Piece of Tribal Artistry

Discover the warmth of this genuine, one-of-a-kind Loribaft rug, featuring a rich red field and detailed pictorial borders that bring unique character to your home.
This Loribaft rug offers a deeply tactile experience, with a thick, plush wool pile that provides exceptional underfoot comfort and natural sound absorption. Its rich, deep red field creates an immediate sense of warmth and groundedness in any room, serving as a sophisticated focal point that balances comfort with enduring style.
As a truly one-of-a-kind piece, this rug carries a narrative all its own. No two rugs from this tradition are identical, meaning that the specific arrangement of motifs and the subtle variations in colour you see here are unique to this single creation. Owning this rug means possessing a piece of art that will never be replicated, ensuring your home remains as singular as your taste.
The design is defined by its striking pictorial borders, which feature a collection of small, whimsical figures and traditional motifs set against a lighter background. This contrast between the expansive, solid red centre and the busy, narrative-driven border creates a dynamic visual balance that is both calming and engaging to look at.
Rooted in the long-standing weaving traditions of the Middle East, this rug is built to last. The high-quality wool is naturally resilient, making it a practical choice for high-traffic areas of your home while maintaining its soft feel over time. It is a piece designed for living, combining the beauty of ancient craft with the durability required for modern life.
The Loribaft rug originates from the nomadic tribes of the Middle East, specifically the Luri people who have passed down their weaving knowledge through generations. These rugs are renowned for their connection to the rugged, beautiful landscapes of their homeland, often reflecting the natural dyes and simplified, bold design language inherent to nomadic life.
The term 'Loribaft' refers to a specific style of weaving that emphasises a denser, more plush pile compared to traditional flatweaves. This technique involves using high-quality wool that is knotted tightly, creating a surface that is soft to the touch yet remarkably durable. For the owner, this signifies a rug that combines the rustic charm of tribal origins with a luxurious, modern-day feel.
Signature design elements of these rugs often include a focus on negative space, with a central field that is either plain or subtly abrash, contrasted by elaborate, hand-drawn borders. These borders frequently contain pictorial motifs—geometric representations of animals, plants, or symbols of protection—which tell stories of the weaver's environment and cultural heritage.
Collectors value Loribaft rugs for their authenticity and the human element present in every knot. Owning one is an act of preserving a traditional craft that remains largely unchanged by industrialisation. Each piece is a storied object, representing the intersection of artistic expression and utilitarian function that defines the best of Middle Eastern weaving traditions.
This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that requires immense skill and patience. By knotting each individual strand of wool by hand, the artisan ensures a level of density and structural integrity that cannot be matched by machine-made alternatives. This precision results in a robust, high-quality foundation that holds its shape and beauty for years to come.
With a weight of 14.7 kg distributed across its size, this rug demonstrates the sheer volume of material and effort invested in its creation. A higher weight-to-size ratio is a clear indicator of a dense, well-constructed pile, reflecting the thousands of hours of manual effort required to complete such a substantial piece. Every inch of this rug is a testament to the artisan's dedication.
The construction process prioritises long-term durability, utilising high-quality wool that is hand-knotted to create a dense, luxurious surface. This careful assembly not only secures the intricate border designs but also ensures that the rug remains a reliable, comfortable addition to your home. It is a genuine investment in traditional craft, built to endure through generations of daily use.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
