Lori rugs take their name from the Luri people, a tribal group indigenous to the mountainous regions of the Middle East. For centuries, these communities have refined their weaving skills, creating textiles that were primarily functional for nomadic life but also deeply expressive of their cultural identity and environment.

The term Lori refers not only to the origin but to a distinct design language that often features bold, geometric motifs. These rugs are typically hand-knotted using local wool, which is known for its durability and natural sheen, providing a sturdy pile that stands up to the rigours of daily life in both traditional tents and modern homes.

Signature elements of Lori rugs include stylized medallions and angular, repeating patterns that often draw inspiration from the surrounding natural landscape. The use of deep, earthy colours is a hallmark of the tradition, with natural dyes historically producing the rich, dark-red and black tones that give these pieces such a powerful, grounded presence.

Owning a Lori rug is an opportunity to connect with a long-standing tradition of skill and artistic expression. These pieces are highly valued by collectors for their authenticity and the way they bridge the gap between ancient nomadic heritage and the needs of contemporary living, representing a commitment to craftsmanship that spans generations.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and a high level of skill. Each individual knot is placed by hand, a labour-intensive method that creates a robust foundation and allows for the precise, intricate geometric motifs that define the Lori tradition.

Given the substantial size of 268 x 174 cm and the significant weight of 13.5 kg, the amount of material and human effort invested in this piece is considerable. The weight is a testament to the density of the wool and the tightness of the weave, which work together to ensure the rug remains stable and resilient over years of use.

The time taken to complete such a rug is measured in months, reflecting a level of dedication that machines simply cannot replicate. This slow, deliberate process ensures that every inch of the rug is crafted with care, resulting in a finished product that is as structurally sound as it is visually compelling.
