Lori rugs originate from the mountainous regions of the Middle East, traditionally woven by the Luri tribes. These nomadic and semi-nomadic peoples have a long history of creating textiles that reflect their environment, using wool sourced from their own flocks to produce rugs that are as functional as they are beautiful.

The craft of these rugs is defined by a deep respect for natural materials and traditional techniques. The wool is often hand-spun, which can result in slight variations in texture and color depth, known as abrash. This characteristic is highly prized by collectors as it signals the authentic, hand-made nature of the piece and adds a dynamic, living quality to the rug's surface.

Visually, Lori rugs are celebrated for their bold, often simplified geometric designs. While formal patterns exist, the most iconic examples feature large, stylized medallions, latch-hook motifs, and tribal symbols that tell stories of the weaver’s heritage. The use of deep, earthy colours, particularly rich reds and dark blues or blacks, is a hallmark of this tradition, creating a powerful visual impact.

Today, these rugs are sought after by those who value heritage and genuine craftsmanship. Owning a Lori rug is an opportunity to acquire a piece of cultural history that stands apart from modern, trend-driven decor. It represents a commitment to supporting ancient weaving traditions and a desire for a home filled with objects that possess real depth and lasting artistic value.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a traditional craft that requires immense focus and patience. By securing each individual knot by hand, the artisan ensures a level of structural integrity and pattern clarity that is impossible to replicate with machinery. This intensive process results in a dense, resilient pile that is built to endure.

With a density of 160,000 knots per m2 and a total weight of 11.1 kg across its 226 x 170 cm frame, this rug represents a significant investment of time and material. The sheer volume of wool used, combined with the precision of the knotting, creates a heavy, high-quality foundation that provides both weight and durability.

Creating a piece of this size and complexity takes a skilled artisan many months of dedicated work. Every knot is a testament to their expertise and the depth of their cultural heritage, resulting in a finished product that offers far greater longevity and visual depth than any alternative.
