Light Nomad KilimHand WovenRug

Orange / Brown174 x 240 cm

The Ghashghai people are a nomadic tribal confederation of the Middle East, renowned for their long-standing tradition of weaving textiles that serve both functional and expressive purposes. Their rugs are deeply tied to the rhythms of migration, historically crafted to be portable, durable, and reflective of the landscape surrounding the weavers.

The term 'Kelim' refers to a specific flatweave technique where no pile is created. Instead, the weft threads are woven tightly over the warp to form the pattern. This style of construction is highly valued for its versatility and the crisp, clean lines it allows for geometric designs, which are a hallmark of tribal weaving traditions.

Visually, Ghashghai Kelims are celebrated for their bold, often symmetric geometric motifs. The patterns frequently incorporate stylized representations of the natural world, such as latch-hook diamonds and tribal symbols that have been passed down through familial lines. These designs are not merely decorative but act as a visual language, telling stories of the weaver's identity and environment.

Owning a Ghashghai piece is an investment in a living heritage. These rugs are highly sought after by collectors who value the human element behind every thread. By choosing a Kelim, you are preserving a craft that emphasises sustainability and ancestral skill, ensuring these ancient techniques continue to thrive in modern homes.

This rug is created using a traditional hand-woven flatweave technique. Unlike pile rugs, this process involves interlacing the horizontal and vertical threads directly to create the pattern, resulting in a lightweight yet exceptionally sturdy construction that is reversible and highly durable.

The quality of this piece is evidenced by its construction, which weighs 8.4 kg for its 240 x 174 cm size. This significant weight relative to its size demonstrates the dense interlacing of the Wool, a process that requires immense focus and manual dexterity from the weaver to maintain consistent tension and pattern alignment across the entire surface.

The creation of this specific Kelim represents weeks of focused manual labour. Every geometric motif and colour transition is achieved entirely by hand, ensuring a level of precision and material integrity that mass-produced alternatives simply cannot match. This dedication to craft results in a final piece that is built to endure for years of daily use.
