Light Nomad KilimHand WovenRug

Orange / Beige104 x 153 cm

The Ghashghai people are a nomadic tribal group from the Middle Eastern region, renowned for their centuries-old weaving heritage. Their textiles are deeply connected to their lifestyle, traditionally created on horizontal looms that could be easily packed and transported during their seasonal migrations.

Kilim construction is a flat-weaving technique where the warp and weft threads are interlaced to form the design directly into the structure of the rug. Unlike knotted rugs, this method creates a reversible, lightweight textile that is highly valued for its portability and clean, graphic aesthetic.

Design elements in Ghashghai weaving often feature bold, stylized geometric motifs such as diamonds and zig-zags that hold symbolic meaning related to the tribe’s natural environment and spiritual beliefs. This specific piece uses these traditional forms in a restrained, modern colour palette, showcasing the evolution of tribal art into contemporary home design.

Owning a Ghashghai kilim is an opportunity to connect with a living tradition. These rugs are collected not only for their visual appeal but for the immense skill and cultural history embedded in every thread, representing a legacy of artistry that has been passed down through generations of nomadic weavers.

This rug is created through a traditional hand-woven process, a technique that requires patience and steady hands. Because it is flat-woven, it lacks a pile, creating a clean and lightweight profile that is both durable and easy to move or store.

The quality of this piece is evident in its weight of 3.2 kg, which, relative to its 153 x 104 cm size, indicates a dense and sturdy construction. This substantial weight reflects the significant amount of wool required and the time invested by the artisan to ensure the weave is tight and long-lasting.

Every thread is carefully positioned to create the precise geometric patterns you see. This manual labour is what gives the rug its authentic, slightly irregular charm that machines simply cannot replicate, ensuring that your investment supports traditional craft skills.
