Light Nomad KilimHand WovenRug

Brown / Beige104 x 151 cm

The Ghashghai people are nomadic tribes from the Middle East, known for their centuries-old tradition of creating textiles that are as functional as they are beautiful. These rugs were historically woven to serve the needs of a mobile lifestyle, providing warmth in tents and durable flooring that could be easily transported across the landscape.

The term 'Kelim' refers to the flat-weaving technique used to create these rugs. Unlike knotted rugs that have a deep pile, Kelims are woven by interlocking the weft and warp threads, resulting in a smooth, reversible textile. This technique requires a high degree of precision, as the pattern is built directly into the structure of the rug during the weaving process.

Visually, Ghashghai textiles are famous for their bold, geometric motifs that often represent the natural world, tribal symbols, or stylised floral elements. These designs are not merely decorative but often act as a visual language, telling stories of the weaver's environment and cultural identity through repeating shapes and patterns.

Owning a Ghashghai Kelim today is an invitation to connect with a rich, enduring heritage. These rugs are highly valued by collectors for their authenticity and the skill involved in their creation. By choosing this piece, you are supporting a craft tradition that has been passed down through generations, preserving a unique cultural legacy within your own home.

This rug is entirely hand-woven by skilled artisans, a process that requires immense focus and a deep understanding of traditional loom techniques. Unlike machine-made alternatives, the hand-woven nature of this piece means that every single thread is placed with intention, resulting in a robust and authentic structure.

With a weight of 3.1 kg for its size, this Kelim demonstrates a dense and substantial construction. This weight is a clear indicator of the quality and the significant amount of wool utilised during the weaving process, ensuring a durable finish that is built to withstand daily use while maintaining its refined aesthetic.
