KunduzHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black94 x 146 cm

Kunduz rugs originate from the northern region of Afghanistan, an area renowned for its long and distinguished history of weaving. The region has served as a cultural crossroads for generations, where different nomadic and settled communities have shared and refined their textile traditions.

The design of Kunduz rugs is characterised by its disciplined geometric order and rich, deep colour palette. Weavers traditionally use dark reds, deep blues, and warm beige tones to create intricate patterns that are both structured and full of life.

The repeating motifs and detailed borders seen in this piece are classic elements of Afghan weaving. These patterns often carry symbolic meanings related to protection, nature, and family life, making the rug a storyteller of the region's cultural heritage.

Rugs from Kunduz are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their robust construction and authentic designs. Acquiring a piece from this tradition means bringing a slice of Central Asian history and genuine handcraft into a contemporary living space.

This rug was entirely hand-knotted by skilled weavers in Afghanistan, a process that requires patience, precision, and decades of refined craft knowledge. Every single knot was tied by hand, resulting in a durable and highly detailed structure that machine-made rugs simply cannot replicate.

Weighing 4.1 kg for its compact 146 x 94 cm size, the rug has a reassuring weight and density. This substantial weight relative to its size indicates a tightly packed knot structure and a generous use of quality wool, ensuring the rug lies flat and resists wear over time.
