KunduzHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red249 x 292 cm

Kunduz rugs originate from the northern region of the Middle East, a territory known for its deep-seated weaving heritage. These rugs are deeply influenced by the nomadic traditions of the surrounding Central Asian cultures, where the art of rug making has been passed down through generations as a primary form of creative expression and cultural storytelling.

The term Kunduz refers to both the city and the regional style, which is often characterised by the use of high-quality wool that is hand-spun to provide a durable and lustrous finish. This traditional approach to material preparation ensures that the rugs are not only beautiful but also capable of withstanding the rigors of daily life, reflecting a standard of quality that has been refined over centuries.

Visually, these rugs are often defined by their bold use of geometric motifs, particularly the repeating medallions that anchor the central field. These designs are frequently enclosed by intricate, multi-layered borders that demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of symmetry and pattern, with a colour palette traditionally dominated by deep, earthy reds and contrasting dark blues or accents of ochre.

Owning a Kunduz rug is a commitment to preserving a craft that values human skill over mass production. Collectors and enthusiasts prize these pieces for their authenticity and the way they bridge the gap between historical craftsmanship and contemporary interior needs, serving as a lasting testament to the artistic spirit of the people in the region.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to complete a single piece. The process begins with the careful preparation of the foundation, followed by the manual placement of every individual knot, a labour-intensive technique that ensures superior structural integrity and longevity.

With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the creation of this rug involves hundreds of thousands of deliberate, hand-placed knots. This level of precision requires immense patience and expertise, directly resulting in the rug's exceptional durability and the fine clarity of its complex geometric motifs. This high knot density provides a more robust and longer-lasting rug, ensuring it remains an investment piece for your home.

The substantial weight of 21.8 kg for this 292 x 249 cm piece is a testament to the quality and volume of materials used in its construction. This weight reflects a dense, high-quality foundation and a generous pile, ensuring that the rug remains stable and retains its shape over many years of enjoyment.
