KunduzHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red203 x 294 cm

Kunduz rugs originate from the northern regions of Afghanistan, a territory with a long and complex history of textile artistry. While often associated with the broader traditions of the region, Kunduz pieces have developed a distinct visual identity that sets them apart from other regional styles.

The art of hand-knotting is a cornerstone of this tradition, requiring a deep understanding of tension, spacing, and rhythm. Artisans use traditional techniques passed down through generations, ensuring that each rug possesses a level of durability and visual harmony that mass-produced alternatives simply cannot match.

The signature design language of these rugs often features bold geometric motifs, frequently incorporating repeating patterns that create a sense of rhythmic symmetry. These designs are inspired by the natural landscape and cultural symbolism, often framed by decorative, detailed borders that pull the entire composition together.

Owning a Kunduz rug is a way to connect with a storied craft tradition. These rugs are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their authenticity, the skill required to produce them, and their ability to anchor a room with a sense of history and cultural depth.

Each thread of this rug is placed by hand in a traditional hand-knotted process, a labour-intensive method that requires immense skill and patience. This precise, manual construction ensures that every pattern element remains sharp and defined, resulting in a finished piece that is as robust as it is beautiful.

With a weight of 17.9 kg spread across its surface, this rug demonstrates a high density of material that speaks to its quality and structural integrity. This substantial weight ensures that the rug lays flat and maintains its shape, reflecting the months of dedicated human effort invested in its creation.
