KunduzHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black154 x 198 cm

The Kunduz rug tradition originates from the northern regions of the Middle East, a land with a deep-rooted history of nomadic and village weaving. These rugs are deeply influenced by the cultural tapestry of Central Asia, reflecting the migration patterns and artistic exchanges that have occurred along the ancient trade routes for centuries.

The term Kunduz refers to both a city and a style of rug weaving that emphasises strong, geometric precision. The craftsmanship involved in these pieces relies on a mastery of knotting techniques passed down through generations. This heritage ensures that every rug produced in this tradition possesses a high level of durability and a distinct aesthetic character that is immediately recognisable to those familiar with the region's output.

Signature design elements of the Kunduz style often include repeating gul motifs or geometric medallions, which are typically set against a rich, dark-red background. These motifs are framed by complex borders that balance the central field, showcasing a sophisticated understanding of symmetry and proportion. The use of deep reds and blacks is a traditional hallmark, creating a bold visual impact that elevates the room.

Collectors value Kunduz rugs not only for their striking beauty but also for the cultural narrative they carry. Owning a piece from this tradition is an investment in a living art form that prioritises human skill over industrial production. It serves as a bridge to a distant landscape, bringing the warmth, history, and dedication of artisans directly into your private sanctuary.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused labour to its creation. The process involves thousands of individual knots, each placed with precision to ensure the sharpness of the geometric motifs and the structural integrity of the final piece. The time invested in this level of detail is what allows the rug to withstand daily use while maintaining its elegant appearance.

With a substantial weight of 9.1 kg, this rug demonstrates the high density of its construction. The weight is a direct result of the generous amount of high-quality wool used in the pile, which provides a plush feel and significant durability. This density is a hallmark of the craft, ensuring that the rug stays firmly in place while offering a substantial and luxurious foundation for your furniture.
