KunduzHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black151 x 201 cm

Kunduz rugs hail from the northern region of Afghanistan, an area with a profound connection to the weaving arts. These rugs are deeply rooted in the cultural landscape of Central Asia, where the craft of hand-knotting has been passed down through generations as a primary form of creative and functional expression.

The terminology surrounding these rugs often reflects the specific tribal influences and regional techniques of the Afghan weavers. A hand-knotted construction is the hallmark of this tradition, ensuring that each knot is placed with intent. This method is not just about assembly; it is about creating a pile that is resilient and capable of developing a beautiful character over the years.

Visually, Kunduz rugs are known for their bold, geometric language. The patterns often feature repeating medallions or angular motifs, enclosed by intricate borders that frame the field. The choice of colours, typically deep reds and blues, is inspired by the natural dyes and historical palettes of the region, creating a look that is both striking and harmonious.

Collecting a Kunduz rug means acquiring a piece of living heritage. These rugs are highly valued for their authenticity and the skill required to produce them. Owning one is a testament to an appreciation for human craftsmanship and the enduring legacy of Middle Eastern textile arts, offering a sense of connection to the artisans and the history they represent.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate significant time to ensure each piece meets a high standard of precision. The process involves individual Wool knots tied by hand onto a cotton foundation, a method that requires immense patience and a sharp eye for detail.

Given the size of this rug, which measures 201 by 151 cm, the labour involved is substantial. The density of the construction is evidenced by its weight of 9.1 kg, indicating a robust and high-quality weave that is built to withstand years of use. This weight is a direct result of the generous amount of material used to create the dense, durable pile.

The complexity of the geometric pattern requires a steady hand to maintain consistency across the entire field. Each knot contributes to the overall strength and sharpness of the design, ensuring that the rug maintains its structural integrity and visual clarity for a long time to come.
