KunduzHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black150 x 199 cm

Kunduz rugs originate from the northern Afghan province of Kunduz, a region renowned for its rich carpet-weaving heritage shaped by diverse Central Asian and Middle Eastern influences. Weavers in this area draw upon centuries of nomadic and village traditions, passing down intricate knotting techniques and symbolic design vocabularies from one generation to the next.

The construction relies on time-honoured hand-knotting traditions where artisans use hand-spun natural fibres. This traditional methodology ensures that each rug possesses a distinct character and robust durability that mass-produced alternatives simply cannot replicate.

Visually, Kunduz carpets are celebrated for their striking geometric layouts, frequently showcasing repeating diamond or gul motifs framed by detailed ornamental borders. Deep reds and dark tones dominate the palette, creating a strong visual rhythm that anchors a room with traditional character.

Collecting a Kunduz rug means preserving a living craft heritage deeply tied to the skill of individual makers. Owning such a piece connects your living space to a long history of human artistry and enduring material quality.

This Kunduz rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of meticulous work to bring each piece to life. The creation process requires extraordinary patience, as every single knot is tied by hand onto the foundation to ensure lasting structural integrity.

With a density of 160,000 knots per m2 and a total weight of 9 kg, approximately 47 million individual knots are expertly placed throughout the 199 by 150 cm surface. This intensive labour investment results in a robust, heavy foundation and a tightly packed pile that secures the wool fibres firmly in place.

The sheer time and human effort required for this level of hand-knotting reflect a deep-rooted craft tradition. Such precision guarantees a durable rug capable of withstanding generations of family life while retaining its refined visual depth.
