KunduzHand KnottedRug

Black / Brown141 x 190 cm

Kunduz rugs hail from the northern reaches of Afghanistan, a region with a long and storied history of nomadic and village weaving traditions. These rugs are deeply tied to the cultural identity of the local tribes who have passed down complex weaving techniques through generations. The evolution of these designs reflects the crossroads of cultures that have traversed the region for centuries.

The craft terminology associated with these rugs often refers to the specific way the Wool is prepared and the foundation is tensioned. A quality Kunduz rug uses Wool that is hand-spun to maintain natural lanolin, which provides a resilient, soft-to-the-touch finish. This attention to material preparation ensures that the rug not only looks beautiful but also retains its lustre and softness over decades of use.

Signature design elements of the Kunduz tradition often include bold, geometric medallions or repeating patterns that draw inspiration from the surrounding landscape and tribal heritage. These patterns are typically framed by elaborate borders, creating a cohesive visual narrative. The use of deep, earthy reds contrasted with light, natural tones is a hallmark of this style, giving the rugs their characteristic warmth and visual impact.

Owning a piece from this tradition is an act of cultural preservation. These rugs are highly valued by collectors because they represent a living craft that relies on human touch rather than industrial automation. To own a Kunduz is to own a piece of Afghan heritage, a testament to the enduring skill of the artisans who continue to produce these complex, enduring works of art.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Afghanistan, a process that requires immense patience and precision. Given the density of the weave, each individual knot is placed by hand over the course of many months, ensuring a level of structural integrity and pattern clarity that machines cannot emulate.

With a knot density of 160,000 knots per m2, the craftsmanship involved is significant. This high density is what gives the rug its sharp, clear design motifs and its exceptionally durable, dense pile. The labour-intensive nature of this process is reflected in the rug's weight of 8 kg, which serves as a tangible indicator of the quality and material density packed into its 190 x 141 cm frame.
