KunduzHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red105 x 147 cm

Kunduz rugs originate from the northern regions of Afghanistan, an area with a long-standing tradition of weaving that has been shaped by the diverse cultures of the Silk Road. These rugs are deeply connected to the nomadic and semi-nomadic heritage of the region, where weaving serves as both a functional necessity and a form of artistic expression.

The construction of these rugs relies on time-honoured techniques that have been passed down through generations. The use of Wool on a cotton foundation creates a robust and lasting piece, with the Wool providing a natural lustre and durability that is highly valued by collectors and enthusiasts of authentic hand-knotted textiles.

Visually, Kunduz rugs are known for their sophisticated use of space and colour, often featuring central medallions surrounded by delicate, repeating floral motifs. The dark, moody palettes typical of this style offer a striking contrast to the vibrant red and gold tones frequently used in the patterns, creating a balanced and harmonious look.

Owning a Kunduz rug is a way to appreciate the skill and cultural history of Afghan weavers. These pieces are collected for their authenticity and the human story behind every knot, representing a connection to a craft that remains largely unchanged by modern industrial methods.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate significant time to ensure each detail is perfectly placed. The process involves a traditional approach where individual knots are tied to the foundation, creating a durable and stable structure that is built to last for generations.

With a weight of 4.6 kg, the rug demonstrates a high density of material that reflects the labour-intensive nature of its creation. The time invested in hand-knotting this piece results in a consistent, firm pile that showcases the artisan's commitment to quality and precision.
