KunduzHand KnottedRug

Dark green / Orange105 x 142 cm

Kunduz rugs originate from the northern region of Afghanistan, a land with a deep-rooted history of textile production. These rugs are born from the nomadic and semi-nomadic traditions that have traversed the rugged landscapes of Central Asia for centuries, evolving into the refined styles we appreciate today.

The craft of hand-knotting is a cornerstone of this tradition, where each strand is meticulously worked by hand. This labour-intensive method allows for the creation of durable, resilient rugs that are prized for their ability to withstand the test of time while keeping their intricate designs sharp and defined.

Visually, Kunduz rugs are known for their bold use of colour and organic, floral-inspired patterns. While many traditional rugs focus on rigid geometric shapes, the Kunduz style often incorporates flowing vines, blossoms, and stylised botanical elements that offer a softer, more fluid aesthetic compared to other regional styles.

Collectors value these rugs not only for their beauty but for the authentic human effort embedded in every square centimetre. Owning a Kunduz rug is a way of preserving a piece of cultural history, representing a bridge between ancient techniques and the modern home.

This Kunduz rug is crafted through a careful, hand-knotted process that requires significant time and skill. By individually securing each knot to the foundation, the artisan ensures a level of structural integrity and pile density that mass-produced alternatives simply cannot replicate.

With a total weight of 4.5 kg across its 142 x 105 cm surface, this rug reflects a dense and substantial construction. The investment of time and raw material creates a durable floor covering that stands up to foot traffic while retaining the clarity of its detailed floral design.
