KunduzHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black104 x 154 cm

Kunduz rugs originate from the northern Afghan province of the same name, a region renowned for its deep-rooted carpet-weaving traditions. Artisans here draw upon centuries of nomadic and settled design heritage, passing down intricate techniques from generation to generation to maintain a distinct regional style.

The construction features traditional hand-knotting methods where individual wool strands are tied securely to the foundation warp and weft threads. This meticulous technique builds a sturdy, cohesive textile structure that distributes pressure evenly and ensures the rug withstands daily family life.

The visual language of Kunduz rugs is typified by repetitive geometric motifs, often featuring repeating guls or octagonal medallions arranged in orderly rows across a vibrant field. Framed by detailed geometric borders, these symbolic patterns reflect the cultural stories and craftsmanship of Central Asian weavers.

Collecting a genuine Kunduz rug means bringing home a piece of living history. Owning such a work highlights an appreciation for traditional handcraft, offering lasting quality and cultural weight that mass-produced floor coverings cannot replicate.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans who spend months meticulously tying each individual knot by hand. For a piece measuring 154 x 104 cm with a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the process requires an estimated total of over 250,000 individual knots.

The substantial weight of 4.8 kg further reflects the dense concentration of natural wool packed into the foundation. This intensive manual labour ensures a level of structural integrity and pattern definition that simply cannot be replicated by machinery.
