Brown / Black165 x 295 cm

Koliai rugs originate from the mountainous regions of the Middle East, where they are traditionally crafted by the Kurdish tribes. These communities have long been recognised for their exceptional skill in creating durable, heavy-duty floor coverings designed to withstand the rigours of nomadic and village life in challenging climates.

The weaving tradition of the Koliai people is defined by a commitment to robust materials and practical utility. Using natural Wool sourced from their own flocks, the weavers create a thick, resilient pile that provides excellent insulation against cold floors, making these rugs as functional as they are beautiful.

Visually, Koliai rugs are known for their bold, geometric language. They often feature large, centralised medallions surrounded by smaller, stylised floral or tribal motifs that reflect the natural surroundings of their origin. The use of vibrant, deep colours—frequently derived from natural dyes—gives these pieces a striking presence that commands attention in any room.

Collecting a Koliai rug means acquiring a piece of living heritage. These rugs are valued not only for their striking aesthetic but for the story they tell of a resilient culture and a craft passed down through generations. Owning one is a way to celebrate traditional artistry while enjoying a piece that is as reliable as it is culturally significant.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that requires immense focus and patience from the artisan. By tying each individual knot by hand, the maker ensures a level of structural integrity and detail that simply cannot be achieved by any other method.

The substantial construction of this piece is evidenced by its weight of 17 kg, which speaks to the density of the Wool and the sheer amount of material invested in its creation. This weight is a hallmark of quality, providing a stable, durable foundation that will withstand daily use while retaining its shape and depth.

Given the size of 295 x 165 cm and the hand-knotted technique, this rug represents hundreds of hours of dedicated work. The precision required to maintain consistency across such a large surface area is a testament to the skill involved, resulting in a durable and lasting piece that is built to be a permanent fixture in your home.
