Koliai rugs originate from the Kurdish tribes residing in the mountainous regions of the Middle East. These nomadic and semi-nomadic groups have maintained a distinct weaving tradition for generations, passed down through families as a vital part of their cultural identity and daily life.

The term Koliai refers to the specific style and provenance of these woven works. These rugs are highly regarded for their robust construction, often featuring a foundation that provides a sturdy base for the hand-knotted wool pile. This combination of materials and technique is what gives these pieces their legendary durability.

Visually, Koliai rugs are known for their bold, geometric language and deep, saturated colour palettes. They often feature large central medallions surrounded by angular floral or animal-inspired motifs, all contained within wide, elaborate borders. These patterns are not merely decorative but often carry symbolic meanings related to the weaver's environment and heritage.

Collectors value these rugs for their authenticity and the sheer skill required to produce them without the aid of modern machinery. Owning a Koliai rug is a way to preserve a piece of living history, representing the heritage, resilience, and artistic vision of the Kurdish tribes who continue to create these remarkable floor coverings.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate weeks of focused labour to bring the complex pattern to life. The process involves securing individual knots to a durable foundation, a labour-intensive method that ensures the rug remains sturdy and holds its shape for decades.

With a weight of 18.2 kg, this rug highlights the generous use of high-quality wool, which is essential for achieving such a luxurious, dense pile. This substantial weight is a direct indicator of the time and skill invested, as the density of the knots allows for the sharp, clear definition of the geometric motifs seen across the field.

The craftsmanship behind this piece is evident in every detail, from the evenness of the pile to the precision of the border work. By choosing a hand-knotted piece, you are supporting a traditional craft that prizes precision and long-term durability over speed, resulting in a floor covering that only improves with age.
