KoliaiHand KnottedRug

Dark red / RedRunner130 x 295 cm

Koliai rugs take their name from the Kurdish tribes that inhabit the mountainous regions of the Middle East. These nomadic and semi-nomadic groups have cultivated a distinct weaving tradition for centuries, drawing inspiration from the rugged landscapes and the cultural heritage of their ancestral lands.

The technical construction of a Koliai rug is defined by the use of high-quality, hand-spun Wool, which is often dyed using natural pigments. This traditional approach to materials ensures that the fibres retain their natural lustre and resilience, creating a pile that gains character and softness as it ages, making it a favourite among those who value longevity.

Visually, these rugs are known for their bold, geometric language. The field is typically filled with stylised tribal motifs, often featuring large, striking medallions and intricate borders that reflect a deep-seated connection to ancient symbolism. The use of dark-red and black is a hallmark of the tradition, providing a dramatic contrast that highlights the complexity of the design.

Owning a piece from this tradition is an investment in cultural preservation. These rugs are highly valued by collectors for their authenticity and the sheer human effort required to complete each design. They are not merely floor coverings, but storied objects that carry the history, skill, and creative spirit of the weavers into the modern home.

This runner is entirely hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and a high degree of skill. With a size of 295 by 130 cm, this rug represents hundreds of hours of focused, rhythmic work. Every single knot is tied by hand, resulting in a structural integrity that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match.

The quality of this piece is further evidenced by its substantial weight of 19.2 kg. This weight is a direct indicator of the dense, premium Wool used and the tight, careful foundation construction, which ensures the rug will lie flat and maintain its shape over time, reflecting the depth of labour invested in its creation.
