Flatwoven rugs from the Middle East carry a rich heritage deeply rooted in nomadic and village traditions. For generations, local weavers have passed down the knowledge of creating durable, pileless textiles that served practical purposes in everyday life, from floor coverings to animal trappings.

The flatwoven technique involves interlacing warp and weft threads directly on a loom, resulting in a lightweight yet exceptionally sturdy structure. This method allows artisans to create crisp, geometric designs and varied bands of colour without the height of a traditional pile.

Traditional Kelim designs often feature horizontal bands, stripes, and tribal motifs that tell stories of the makers and their surroundings. The natural dyes and earthy tones used in these pieces reflect the landscapes of the region, creating a harmonious and timeless visual language.

Collecting vintage Kelim rugs allows you to preserve a piece of living cultural history. Each textile represents months of thoughtful labour and a deep connection to regional craft traditions, making it a meaningful addition to any thoughtful interior.

This rug is entirely handmade through traditional flatweaving techniques, reflecting the dedicated craftsmanship and time invested by skilled artisans. Without the use of machinery, every strand is carefully worked by hand to create a sturdy and resilient textile.

Weighing 19.7 kg across its generous dimensions, this piece features a dense and substantial construction that speaks to the high volume of natural material and human effort required to complete it. Such careful creation ensures a hard-wearing finish designed to last for years to come.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
