Brown / OrangeRunner74 x 233 cm

The Kelim Nimbaft tradition originates from the rugged, mountainous regions of the Middle East, where weaving is not just a trade but a vital cultural expression. These flat-woven textiles have evolved over centuries, reflecting the nomadic lifestyles and the resourcefulness of the people who created them to insulate their homes against the harsh climate.

The term Nimbaft refers to the specific technique of incorporating decorative tufts into a flat-woven base. This method adds a dimension of depth and softness that differentiates these pieces from standard flat-weaves. By integrating these tufts, the weaver creates a tactile surface that balances the simplicity of the Kilim structure with a more complex, textured aesthetic.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their natural, earthy palettes and the deliberate, often spontaneous-looking arrangement of motifs. The use of natural wool dyes creates a subtle variation in shade that brings the rug to life, ensuring that it ages beautifully. The simple, geometric nature of the weave is often contrasted by the irregular, artistic placement of the tufted accents.

Collecting a piece from this tradition means preserving a heritage of skill and human connection. These rugs are valued not only for their aesthetic versatility but for the story they tell about the artisan's environment and the cultural importance of the loom in local society. Owning one is an investment in a living art form that celebrates the beauty of imperfection.

This Kelim is created through a traditional hand-woven technique that requires patience and a high level of skill. Unlike mass-produced items, this piece is built on a sturdy cotton foundation, ensuring that the finished product maintains its shape and structural integrity over time.

The weight of 6.9 kg for a runner of this size serves as a testament to the density and quality of the materials used. The time-intensive process of hand-weaving the base while carefully incorporating the scattered wool tufts ensures that the texture is consistent and durable, reflecting the depth of human effort invested in every centimetre of the rug.

By choosing a hand-woven piece, you are supporting a craft tradition where every decision is made by an artisan's hand. The precision required to maintain the tension of the weave and the rhythmic distribution of the pattern highlights the expertise involved, resulting in a floor covering that is built to last.
