Kilim NimbaftHand WovenRug

Green154 x 199 cm

Kelim rugs have been woven for centuries across the Middle East and Central Asia, serving as essential, functional items for nomadic and village life. The term Nimbaft refers to a specific style of weaving that emphasises a clean, flat surface, making these rugs highly practical for both floor and wall display. These traditions have been passed down through generations, with Afghanistan remaining a significant hub for this authentic craft.

The technique of flat-weaving is what distinguishes a Kelim from pile-knotted rugs. By eliminating the pile, the weaver focuses on the interplay of the warp and weft, which requires immense precision to keep the edges straight and the motifs symmetrical. This construction results in a lightweight, portable, and remarkably strong textile that has historically been used for everything from floor coverings to saddlebags.

The design of this piece is defined by its repeating diamond motifs, a classic geometric language found in tribal weaving. Each diamond is rendered in a variety of saturated hues, contrasting beautifully against the muted grey ground. This specific arrangement of motifs is not only decorative but often carries symbolic meaning within the weaving community, reflecting local folklore and the natural environment.

Collecting a hand-woven Kelim is an investment in cultural heritage. These rugs represent a bridge between the past and the present, showcasing the immense skill required to produce something so visually compelling without modern machinery. By choosing a one-of-a-kind Nimbaft, you are supporting a lineage of artistry and ensuring that these time-honoured techniques continue to thrive in the modern home.

This Kelim is expertly hand-woven in Afghanistan, a region with a deep-seated history of creating exceptional flat-weave textiles. The process involves a traditional loom technique where the pattern is created by interlacing the coloured wool through the cotton warp, resulting in a thin, durable, and reversible rug that is lightweight yet incredibly robust.

With a weight of 3.1 kg, this rug demonstrates a high density of material that speaks to the skill required to maintain consistent tension throughout the weaving process. The time and patience invested by the artisan in placing every single strand of wool ensure that the geometric motifs are crisp and well-defined, providing a level of quality and precision that reflects the dedication behind its creation.
