Kilim NimbaftHand WovenRug

Dark teal / Green127 x 174 cm

The Kelim tradition is deeply rooted in the nomadic cultures of the Middle East and Central Asia. Traditionally, these flat-woven rugs were created by tribal communities for practical purposes, serving as floor coverings, tent dividers, or saddlebags. Their portability and resilience made them essential items for life on the move.

The term Nimbaft refers to a specific style of weaving often associated with Afghan craft. These rugs are celebrated for their adaptability and the way they showcase the weaver's ability to create complex, rhythmic patterns without the use of a traditional pile. This technique produces a reversible rug, doubling its potential lifespan and utility.

The design of this piece is defined by its repeating geometric motifs, which often carry symbolic meaning within the weaving community. While the vibrant teal colour is a modern interpretation, the placement of the motifs follows traditional aesthetic structures that have been passed down through generations of Afghan weavers.

Owning a hand-woven Kelim is an opportunity to connect with a centuries-old craft. These pieces are highly valued by collectors not just for their visual appeal, but for the history and human dedication woven into every thread. By choosing this rug, you are supporting a legacy of skill that continues to flourish in the workshops of Afghanistan today.

This Kelim is meticulously hand-woven, a process that relies entirely on the skill and precision of the weaver. By interlacing the wool and cotton foundations, the artisan creates a flat, durable surface that lacks a pile, resulting in a thin and exceptionally sturdy textile.

Weighing 2.2 kg, this rug represents a significant investment of human effort. The time required to carefully place every thread by hand ensures a level of structural integrity that mass-produced alternatives simply cannot match, making it a reliable and long-lasting addition to your home.
