Kilim NimbaftHand WovenRug

Orange / Beige105 x 150 cm

The Kelim Nimbaft tradition has deep roots in the weaving culture of Afghanistan, where the art of flat-weaving has been passed down through generations. These rugs are born from a history of nomadic and village life, where weavers translated their environment and cultural identity into intricate patterns without the use of a pile, resulting in a lighter and more versatile textile.

The term 'Kelim' refers to the flat-weaving technique used, which is distinct for its lack of knotted pile. This method creates a reversible, durable, and lightweight rug that is highly valued for its portability and strength. The 'Nimbaft' style often incorporates specific design choices that balance traditional techniques with a more open, airy composition.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their use of natural dyes and geometric motifs, which often tell stories of the weaver's surroundings. While many traditional rugs are heavily patterned, the Nimbaft style often embraces negative space, allowing the individual motifs to stand out as distinct artistic elements against the neutral Wool base.

Owning a Kelim Nimbaft is an investment in a storied craft tradition. These rugs are highly sought after by collectors who value the human element in every thread. They represent a bridge between ancient techniques and contemporary living, offering a piece of cultural history that is as functional as it is beautiful.

This rug is entirely hand-woven, a process that requires immense patience and skill from the artisan. By carefully interlacing the Wool, the weaver creates a flat-weave construction that is exceptionally sturdy and long-lasting, designed to endure daily use while maintaining its shape and visual integrity over time.

With a weight of 1.6 kg for its size, this piece reflects a dense and robust construction that speaks to the quality of the materials used. This weight is a testament to the significant amount of hand-labour invested in every square centimetre, ensuring that the final product is not only beautiful but also substantial and resilient.
