Orange / BlackRunner84 x 240 cm

Kelim weaving has deep roots across the Middle East and Central Asia, where nomadic and semi-nomadic communities crafted flatwoven textiles for everyday shelter and floor coverings. Over generations, these utilitarian textiles evolved into sophisticated expressions of regional artistry, carried along historic trade routes and adapted into contemporary homes.

The flatwoven construction of a kelim means there is no knotted pile. Instead, artisans weave the warp and weft threads together to produce a flat, lightweight textile that is equally durable and reversible. This technique allows for crisp, graphic pattern lines and a sturdy finish that has stood the test of time.

Design traditions in Afghan kelims often feature repeating geometric motifs, stepped diamonds, and bold borders designed to ward off evil and tell stories of the weaver's community. The striking composition on this runner relies on high-contrast diamonds framed by clean linear borders, showcasing a refined sense of balance and symmetry.

Owning a handmade kelim connects your home to a rich heritage of textile artistry. Each piece represents hours of careful hand-weaving by craftspeople who preserve ancient techniques, offering you a durable floor covering imbued with genuine cultural weight and enduring character.

This kelim runner is entirely handmade through traditional hand-woven techniques practiced by skilled artisans in Afghanistan. Without a raised pile, the design is created by interlocking the weft threads tightly together, resulting in a durable, reversible flatweave structure.

Weighing 4 kg across its 240 x 84 cm dimensions, this piece demonstrates a dense and considered construction. The substantial weight reflects the generous amount of natural wool and the careful hand tension applied during weaving, ensuring it stays firmly in place on your floor and withstands daily foot traffic.
