Kilim ModernHand WovenRug

Black240 x 263 cm

Kelim weaving has deep roots across the Middle East and Central Asia, where nomadic and village communities traditionally created flatwoven textiles for daily utility and shelter. Over generations, these utilitarian crafts evolved into celebrated art forms, with Afghan weavers refining techniques passed down through families.

The flatweave construction means there are no cut loops, relying instead on tightly interlaced warp and weft threads to form the design. This traditional method yields a sturdy, reversible textile that has historically been favored by travelling communities for its durability and ease of transport.

Stylistically, modern kelims bridge traditional heritage with contemporary design sensibilities, often featuring clean lines, striped visual rhythms, and minimalist fields. This particular piece showcases a grounded black palette that lets the subtle variations in the wool texture take centre stage.

Owning an authentic Afghan kelim connects your home to a long lineage of textile artistry. It represents an appreciation for genuine human skill, regional heritage, and sustainable natural materials that outlast fleeting interior trends.

This rug is entirely handmade through traditional hand-woven techniques, requiring patience and steady skill from the artisan. Every strand of wool is carefully interlaced to build a sturdy, durable flatweave structure without a traditional pile.

Weighing 12.6 kg across a size of 263 x 240 cm, this substantial weight reflects the dense, tightly packed construction and generous amount of natural material invested in its creation. This careful hand-weaving process demands weeks of dedicated labor to complete.

The meticulous hand-woven technique ensures clean lines and a resilient structure that stands up to daily living while maintaining its characteristic flat profile and neat finish.
