Kilim ModernHand WovenRug

Dark blue / Orange152 x 202 cm

Kilim rug-making is rooted in the rich textile traditions of Central Asia and the Middle East, where nomadic and village communities perfected flatweaving techniques over centuries. Unlike pile rugs, kelims are woven by tightly interweaving warp and weft strands together, producing a lightweight, reversible textile that was originally crafted for practical nomadic living, from floor coverings to animal pack saddles.

The flatwoven construction relies on a meticulous technique where pattern colours are created by stopping and starting the weft threads at the boundary of each motif. This slit-weave method produces clean geometric edges and a durable, flat textile that lies smoothly on any surface.

Afghan kelims are celebrated for their bold geometric vocabulary, often drawing inspiration from tribal symbols, protective amulets, and traditional motifs passed down through generations. This particular piece showcases traditional arrow patterns arranged within balanced borders, framing a tranquil blue field with earthy accents.

Owning an authentic Afghan kelim means preserving a living craft heritage. Each piece represents hours of dedicated handwork by artisans who keep these historical weaving traditions alive, offering collectors and homeowners a tangible link to centuries of textile art.

This rug is entirely hand-woven by skilled artisans in Afghanistan, a process that requires considerable patience, skill, and human effort. Without the aid of machines, the weaver carefully interlaces the yarns row by row to build the flat structure.

Weighing 6.1 kg across a 202 x 152 cm surface, the solid construction reflects a high density of materials packed securely into the weave. This careful hand-weaving process ensures the structural integrity of the flat surface, providing a durable floor covering designed to last for years.
