Kilim ModernHand WovenRug

Dark blue / Orange133 x 191 cm

Kilim weaving has a long and storied history rooted in the nomadic and village traditions of Central Asia and the Middle East. Originally created as practical furnishings for tents and homes these flatwoven textiles served as blankets storage sacks and floor coverings designed for a nomadic lifestyle.

The word kilim itself refers to a pileless textile produced by tightly interweaving the horizontal weft strands with the vertical warp threads. This technique allows artisans to create sharp geometric patterns and reversible designs without the need for knotting resulting in a lightweight yet remarkably durable fabric.

Traditional kilims often feature symbolic motifs passed down through generations including geometric shapes and directional arrows that tell stories of nature protection and daily life. While deeply traditional in origin modern kilims like this one adapt these ancient design languages to suit contemporary living spaces.

Owning a hand-woven kilim means connecting with a living craft heritage. Each piece represents hours of careful labour by skilled artisans preserving techniques that have remained largely unchanged for centuries and bringing genuine cultural value into the modern home.

This rug is entirely handmade through traditional hand weaving techniques by skilled artisans in Afghanistan. Without a raised pile the craft relies on tightly interlacing warp and weft threads to create a durable flat textile that showcases the weaver's precision.

The process requires remarkable skill and patience as artisans manually pass each coloured yarn through the loom to form the crisp geometric patterns. Weighing 5.1 kg across its 191 x 133 cm dimensions the dense construction reflects a substantial investment of time and human effort.

This dedication to traditional craftsmanship ensures a resilient floor covering that holds its shape and beauty over years of use offering a level of authenticity that machine-made rugs simply cannot match.
