Bring history and warmth into your space with this one-of-a-kind runner, expertly hand-woven with traditional Afghan techniques and a striking, colourful geometric design.

This one-of-a-kind runner serves as a beautiful focal point for any hallway or narrow living space, offering both visual interest and practical comfort. Its low, 5 mm pile provides a smooth, tactile surface that feels pleasant underfoot, making it an excellent choice for high-traffic areas in your home.

Crafted from Wool, this runner offers natural warmth and sound-absorbing qualities that enhance the comfort of your interior environment. The material is known for its durability and resilience, ensuring that your investment remains a functional and stylish part of your home for years to come.

The vibrant, multi-coloured palette and intricate geometric patterns reflect the rich design heritage of Afghanistan. Because each piece is woven by hand, you are acquiring a unique work of art that will never be replicated, bringing a sense of exclusivity to your living space.

Designed to be both versatile and enduring, this runner excels in various interior settings. Its slim profile allows for easy placement, while the bold, artistic motifs provide a grounding presence that balances contemporary and traditional decor alike.

The tradition of weaving kelim rugs is deeply rooted in the history of Afghanistan, where nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes have produced these flat-woven textiles for generations. These rugs were originally created for practical purposes, such as floor coverings, tent dividers, and storage bags, serving as essential components of daily life in the rugged landscape of the region.

The term kelim specifically refers to the tapestry-weave technique, which relies on the weft-faced method to create its signature flat, pile-less surface. This method is highly technical and requires the weaver to carefully manage colour changes to form sharp, clean lines in the design, a skill that is passed down through families and maintained with great pride.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their bold geometric motifs, which often carry symbolic meanings related to protection, fertility, and the natural world. The use of vibrant, contrasting colours is a hallmark of this tradition, reflecting the lively aesthetic preferences of the weavers and the natural dyes traditionally available in the Middle Eastern landscape.

Owning an Afghan kelim is an invitation to connect with a storied tradition of craftsmanship. These pieces are highly valued by collectors not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for the human effort and cultural heritage they embody, representing a timeless connection to the artisanal spirit of Central Asia.

This runner is entirely hand-woven, a process that requires immense skill and patience from the weaver. By interlocking the wool threads without the use of a foundation pile, the artisans create a flat, durable surface that is both lightweight and incredibly strong.

The 2.4 kg weight of this 304 x 80 cm piece is a testament to the density and quality of the materials used. The significant amount of hand-applied labour involved in creating such a large, complex geometric pattern ensures that every detail is captured with precision, resulting in a robust runner built for long-term use.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
