Kelim Afghan Old Style - A Vibrant Runner for Your Home

Bring home a piece of history with this one-of-a-kind Afghan Kelim runner. Hand-woven with traditional skill, its colourful geometric pattern adds warmth and character to any hallway or narrow space.

This authentic Afghan runner brings a sense of tradition and warmth to your home. Its flat-woven surface offers a clean, low-profile feel that is both practical and comfortable underfoot, making it an ideal choice for high-traffic areas like hallways or entryways.

The rug is crafted from high-quality Wool, known for its natural resilience and ability to maintain its rich colour over many years. This material choice ensures a sturdy, long-lasting surface that stands up to daily life while providing a soft, tactile experience.

As a one-of-a-kind piece, this rug is truly unique. You are acquiring a creation that exists nowhere else in the world, ensuring your home features a distinct focal point that will never be replicated. Its design is a testament to the artisan's individual expression and creative vision.

The runner features a striking geometric pattern that balances bold, vibrant tones with traditional Afghan design sensibilities. This combination creates a lively atmosphere, anchoring your space with a sense of cultural heritage and artistic depth that elevates any room it occupies.

Kelim rugs have a long history in the Middle East and Central Asia, serving as essential elements of nomadic life for centuries. These flat-woven textiles were traditionally created by tribes for utilitarian purposes, such as floor coverings, tent dividers, and storage bags, and were designed to be portable yet incredibly durable.

The term 'Kelim' refers to the specific tapestry-weave technique used to create these rugs. Unlike pile rugs, Kelims are made by interweaving the coloured weft threads, which produces a flat, reversible surface that is lightweight and versatile. This technique allows for sharp, clean geometric patterns that have become the hallmark of the style.

Afghan Kelims are particularly celebrated for their use of bold, earthy, and vibrant palettes. The designs often feature repeating geometric motifs, such as diamonds and zig-zags, which are deeply rooted in the cultural symbolism of the region. Each motif often tells a story or represents a protective charm passed down through generations of weavers.

Owning an Afghan Kelim is an investment in a living tradition. These rugs are highly valued by collectors for their authenticity and the human effort required to produce each piece. By bringing one into your home, you are not just adding a decorative element, but honouring a craft that has survived and evolved across the centuries.

This rug is meticulously hand-woven, a traditional craft that requires immense patience and steady precision. By passing the weft threads over and under the warp threads by hand, the artisan creates a tight, durable fabric that is much stronger than mass-produced alternatives.

With a weight of 1.3 kg for this 190 x 69 cm runner, the rug demonstrates a dense construction that speaks to the quality of the Wool and the care invested in its creation. This density ensures the runner lays flat and maintains its shape even with consistent use.

The process of creating such a detailed geometric design without the use of machines is a testament to the skill involved. Each colour transition and line is managed by hand, reflecting a level of human dedication that results in a finished piece with authentic character and lasting integrity.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
