Afghan Kelim Old Style Rug - A Warm Haven for Your Home

Discover this truly one-of-a-kind Afghan Kelim rug, handmade from 100% wool with a low 5 mm pile that brings cosy texture to your living space.

Bring a warm and grounding touch to your living room or study with this handmade Afghan Kelim rug. Measuring 386 x 314 cm, it offers a generous span of tactile comfort underfoot, featuring a low 5 mm pile that feels smooth and sturdy.

Woven entirely from 100% wool, this piece provides natural warmth and sound-absorbing qualities that help create a calm and welcoming atmosphere in any indoor space.

Because no two handmade Kelims are ever identical, this exact rug exists nowhere else in the world. Owning it means bringing home a genuinely unique piece of craft history that will never be replicated.

Sourced directly from Afghanistan, this rug carries a rich heritage of traditional design into your everyday life, offering both durable quality and timeless visual depth.

Kelim rugs have a long and storied tradition rooted in the nomadic and village cultures of the Middle East and Central Asia. Woven without a knotted pile, these flatwoven textiles were originally created by tribal communities for practical uses such as floor coverings, blankets, and storage bags, reflecting a lifestyle deeply connected to the land.

The flatweave construction means the rug is crafted by interlacing warp and weft threads tightly together, creating a sturdy and durable fabric that lies flat on the floor. This method requires precise tension control by the weaver to keep the geometric alignment sharp and clean.

Afghan Kelims are known for their lively geometric patterns and rich cultural motifs, often incorporating diamonds, squares, and traditional symbols passed down through generations. The vibrant colour palette found in this piece draws on natural dye traditions that have characterised Persian weaving for centuries.

Collecting a Kelim rug means preserving a living tradition of handcraft that bridges past and present. Each piece tells the story of the artisan's skill and the cultural heritage of the region, making it a valued addition to any considered home.

This rug is meticulously hand-woven by skilled artisans using traditional flatweaving techniques passed down through generations. The process requires immense patience and steady hands as each motif is carefully placed across the loom.

Weighing 12.1 kg across its large 386 x 314 cm surface, the dense construction reflects the substantial amount of time and physical effort invested by the weaver to ensure long-lasting durability.

Every inch of the flatwoven surface demonstrates the careful attention to detail that only human hands can achieve, resulting in a sturdy and well-crafted floor covering built for daily life.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
