Kelim Afghan Old Style - A Lived-In Story for Your Floor

Discover this truly one-of-a-kind Afghan Kelim rug, meticulously hand-woven from 100% wool to bring vibrant warmth and authentic heritage to your home.
Bringing a rich sense of history into your home, this Afghan Kelim rug is a genuinely one-of-a-kind piece. Because no two handmade flatweaves are ever identical, owning this particular rug means you have something that exists nowhere else in the world, and it will never be replicated again.
Woven entirely from 100% wool, the rug offers a wonderfully natural feel underfoot. It provides a comforting layer of warmth and a pleasing tactile quality that softens hard flooring while helping to absorb sound in busy living spaces.
Measuring 5 mm in thickness, this low-profile flatweave sits neatly beneath furniture and around doorways without catching. The tight weave construction creates a stable, durable surface designed to handle daily life with ease.
Originating from Afghanistan, this traditional piece carries centuries of regional craft expertise directly into your living room, study, or bedroom, creating a grounded and welcoming atmosphere.
Kelim rugs have a long-standing history rooted in the nomadic and village traditions of the Middle East and Central Asia. Originally created by tribal weavers for practical domestic use such as floor coverings, saddlebags, and tent dividers, these flatweaves represent a deeply human craft that has been passed down across generations.
Unlike pile carpets, Kelims are produced using a flat-weaving technique where the warp and weft threads are tightly interleaved to create a smooth, pattern-rich surface without any raised pile. This construction method allows for sharp geometric designs and a lightweight versatility that made them easy for nomadic communities to pack and transport.
The visual language of Afghan Kelims is defined by striking geometric motifs, diamond symbols, and earthy or vibrant colour palettes inspired by regional flora and tribal symbolism. Each weaver introduces subtle variations in shade and motif placement, ensuring that every piece tells its own distinct story.
Collecting vintage and traditional Kelims is a way to preserve an authentic craft tradition. Owning one connects your living space to a legacy of skilled artisans, bringing genuine cultural weight and enduring character to modern interiors.
This rug is entirely handmade through traditional hand-weaving techniques, requiring weeks of dedicated human effort by skilled artisans. Without the aid of machinery, every individual strand of natural fibre is carefully worked into the flatweave structure by hand.
Weighing 11.6 kg across a generous 387 x 300 cm area, the substantial weight reflects the dense application of material and the exceptional level of craftsmanship invested in its creation, ensuring a sturdy and long-lasting foundation for your home.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
