KeshanHand KnottedRug

Dark yellow290 x 396 cm

The Keshan rug tradition finds its roots in the historic city of Kashan, located in the heart of the Middle Eastern desert. Historically, this city was a vital stop on the ancient trade routes, known for its production of fine silks and wool textiles that were highly prized by royalty and merchants alike.

The technical mastery required to produce a Keshan rug involves a dedication to traditional knotting techniques that have been passed down through generations. These methods are designed to create a durable foundation that allows for the creation of complex, flowing patterns that appear to dance across the surface of the rug.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their elegant floral motifs, often anchored by a central medallion and surrounded by sweeping vines and palmettes. The borders are typically filled with intricate, repeating geometric or floral patterns that frame the field perfectly, a hallmark of the classic Middle Eastern style.

Collecting a Keshan is an investment in cultural heritage and skilled artistry. These rugs are valued not just for their aesthetic beauty, but for the story of the region they represent. Owning one is a way to celebrate a long-standing tradition of craftsmanship that values quality and detail above all else.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and skill from the artisan. By carefully looping each knot by hand, the maker ensures a level of structural integrity and pattern precision that is simply not possible with machine-made alternatives.

Given the significant weight of 42.5 kg, this rug represents a substantial investment in materials and labour. The density of the construction is a hallmark of its quality, ensuring that the pile remains resilient and durable even with years of daily use in your home.

The time and human effort poured into this creation are reflected in every detail of the finished piece. By prioritising traditional methods over faster, automated production, this rug offers a longevity and depth of character that will allow it to be a cherished part of your home for years to come.
