KeshanHand KnottedRug

Brown / Orange190 x 305 cm

The Keshan rug tradition finds its roots in the historic city of Kashan, a central hub along the ancient trade routes of the Middle East. Historically, this region has been renowned for its masterful weaving, with a legacy that dates back centuries, often associated with the production of some of the finest carpets in existence.

The term Keshan refers to both the origin and a specific style of weaving that emphasises precision and balance. These rugs are known for their high knot density, which allows for the fluid, curved lines found in their iconic floral patterns. This density is not merely for show; it is the technical foundation that ensures the rug remains resilient and visually crisp over decades of use.

Signature design elements of the Keshan style typically include a prominent central medallion, often surrounded by elaborate arabesques, palmettes, and scrolling vine motifs. The borders are usually as ornate as the central field, providing a framed effect that draws the eye inward. While traditional palettes often favour deep reds and blues, this piece showcases how the style adapts to more neutral, light-filled aesthetics.

Owning a piece from this tradition is a commitment to heritage and exceptional skill. These rugs are collected not only for their visual impact but for the cultural history woven into every thread. To possess a hand-knotted piece of this calibre is to connect with a long-standing lineage of artistry that remains a benchmark for quality in the world of fine floor coverings.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to every piece. With a knot density of 250,000 knots per m2, the sheer level of human effort involved is reflected in the sharpness of the intricate floral details and the overall structural integrity of the rug.

The construction process is a testament to traditional techniques passed down through generations. By individually hand-tying each knot, the weaver ensures a dense and durable pile that maintains its beauty and shape, even with daily use in busy areas of the home.

At a weight of 21.4 kg, this rug demonstrates the high-quality materials and dense construction that define its value. This physical weight is a direct result of the intensive labour and premium wool used, providing a sturdy, high-quality foundation that will stand the test of time.
