Keshan FineHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red135 x 218 cm

The Keshan rug tradition finds its roots in the historic city of Kashan, located in the central region of the Middle East. For centuries, this city has been a celebrated hub for textile excellence, famous for its contributions to the development of sophisticated weaving techniques and refined aesthetic standards.

The term Keshan refers to the specific design language and weaving quality that originated in this region. These rugs are highly regarded for their ability to blend technical precision with artistic flair, often utilising a dense knotting style that allows for the creation of intricate, flowing floral patterns and elaborate medallion structures.

Signature design elements of a classic Keshan often include a central, ornate medallion that rests on a field filled with delicate floral sprays, arabesques, and palmettes. The border is typically just as complex, often mirroring the elegance of the central field and framed by multiple guard stripes that provide a sense of balance and harmony.

Collecting a rug from this tradition is an opportunity to acquire a piece of living history. These rugs are valued not only for their visual impact but also for the deep cultural heritage they represent. Owning a genuine Keshan is a testament to an appreciation for lasting craftsmanship and the artistry that has defined this region for generations.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that requires immense skill and patience. By securing each individual knot by hand onto the foundation, the artisans create a surface that is both incredibly dense and highly resilient to daily wear.

With a total of approximately 735,000 knots individually placed throughout the piece, the level of precision achieved is remarkable. This high knot density is the reason for the rug's sharp, clear design patterns and its ability to maintain its structural integrity over time.

The substantial weight of 10.9 kg serves as a testament to the quality of materials and the density of the knots used in its creation. This weight ensures that the rug lies flat and stable, reflecting the significant human effort and time invested to complete such a finely crafted piece.
