Dark red / BrownRunner87 x 292 cm

Kazak rugs have a storied past that traces back to the mountainous regions of the Caucasus. While the name originally referred to specific tribal weaving traditions from that area, the style has evolved and found a vibrant new home in Afghanistan. Today, Afghan weavers are celebrated for keeping these traditional designs alive, blending ancient motifs with modern sensibilities.

The term Kazak is often associated with a bold and expressive aesthetic that favours geometric shapes and strong, clear colours. These rugs are known for their sturdy, high-pile construction, which was originally intended to provide insulation against cold mountain climates. This focus on durability remains a hallmark of the style today.

Visually, these runners are defined by their use of repeating geometric medallions and symbolic motifs. The borders are often just as significant as the central field, frequently featuring intricate guard stripes that frame the composition. The use of deep blues and vibrant reds is a classic choice, historically achieved through natural dyes that have been refined over generations to produce rich, consistent hues.

Collectors and enthusiasts value these pieces for their connection to a long-standing craft tradition. Owning a piece like this is a way to appreciate the skill of the artisans who carry forward these complex patterns, ensuring that the cultural significance of the design remains a tangible part of our modern living environments.

This runner is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans. The process begins by setting up a sturdy foundation, onto which each individual knot is tied by hand. This labour-intensive method ensures that the rug is exceptionally durable and capable of holding its shape and pattern detail over time.

With a weight of 7.6 kg, this runner demonstrates a dense and substantial construction. The combination of its size and weight highlights the significant amount of wool and effort invested in its creation, resulting in a robust piece that is designed to withstand the demands of a high-traffic area in your home.
