Kazak FineHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Brown117 x 175 cm

Kazak rugs originate from the Caucasus region and are celebrated for their bold, graphic designs and vibrant colour palettes. While the tradition has deep roots in the mountainous areas between the Black and Caspian Seas, the craft has evolved significantly over centuries, with modern fine examples now masterfully produced in Afghanistan.

The term Kazak refers to a specific style of tribal rug-making that prioritises geometric abstraction over floral designs. These rugs are known for their sturdy, high-quality Wool piles, which are traditionally sheared and hand-spun to ensure the longevity and lustrous sheen that collectors seek.

Visually, these rugs are characterised by iconic repeating motifs, such as the prominent geometric medallions and hooked polygons seen here. The borders are often framed by precise, angular geometric patterns that provide a formal structure to the otherwise expressive and free-spirited field designs.

Owning a Kazak rug is an invitation to connect with a long-standing tradition of nomadic weaving. These pieces are highly valued by collectors not just for their aesthetic impact, but as authentic expressions of skill and heritage that carry the soul of their origin into the contemporary home.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans, a process that requires immense focus and patience. Each individual knot is tied by hand, ensuring that the final piece is not only visually striking but also incredibly resilient against everyday wear.

With a total of approximately 185,000 knots painstakingly placed throughout the piece, this rug represents months of dedicated labour. This high level of precision allows for the sharp, clear definition of the geometric motifs while creating a dense pile that stands up to heavy foot traffic.

The weight of 6.1 kg across its size is a testament to the generous amount of material used in its construction. This density is the hallmark of a premium hand-knotted rug, signalling a level of quality and structural integrity that simply cannot be achieved by mechanical means.
