Kazak ArianaHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black201 x 301 cm

Kazak rugs originate from the Caucasus region, though the name has become synonymous with a specific style of bold, geometric weaving that has been revitalised by master artisans in Afghanistan. The Ariana style is a modern evolution of these ancient traditions, blending historical design sensibilities with contemporary colour palettes to suit today's homes.

The term hand-knotted refers to the traditional method where each individual knot is tied by hand onto the foundation. This technique allows for the intricate, crisp patterns that define the Kazak aesthetic. The density of these knots ensures the rug lasts longer and allows for finer detail, creating a surface that is both durable and visually complex.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their use of bold, stylized geometric medallions, often referred to as guls or stars, set against a rich, often abrash-dyed field. The borders are typically formal and repeating, framing the central motifs with a sense of symmetry that draws the eye inward. The colour traditions rely on deep, natural-looking tones that provide a sense of depth and warmth.

Owning a hand-knotted rug from this tradition is an investment in cultural history. These pieces are highly valued by collectors and enthusiasts because they represent a living bridge to the past, where the skill of the weaver is permanently captured in the Wool. Every rug serves as a functional piece of art that carries the weight and integrity of a generations-old craft.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans, a process that requires immense patience and precision. With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the creation of this 301 x 201 cm piece represents hundreds of hours of dedicated labour, ensuring a level of durability and pattern definition that machine-made alternatives cannot match.

The weight of 20.6 kg is a direct result of the high volume of Wool used in the pile. This significant weight is a hallmark of a well-constructed, dense rug, signalling that no shortcuts were taken in the weaving process. The result is a substantial floor covering that stays firmly in place and resists wear through years of active use.
