Kashmar rugs originate from the town of the same name in the Khorasan province of the Middle East. Historically, this region has been a vibrant centre for weaving, known for its ability to adapt and refine traditional styles. The rugs from this area are often celebrated for their large-scale designs and their connection to the rich cultural tapestry of the region.

The term 'Kashmar' refers to a specific design tradition that often incorporates elaborate floral patterns, including the popular 'Zir-e-Khaki' or 'under the soil' motif, which depicts various objects and flowers. The structure of these rugs is usually quite robust, providing a sturdy base that allows for intricate patterns to be woven with great precision.

Signature design elements of Kashmar rugs often include a central medallion surrounded by a field of densely packed floral sprays and vines. The borders are typically well-defined and complement the central design, creating a harmonious balance. This specific piece reflects these traditions, showcasing a sophisticated layout that is both balanced and visually engaging.

Owning a Kashmar rug is an opportunity to possess a piece of a storied craft tradition. These rugs are highly valued by collectors and enthusiasts alike for their historical significance and the skill required to produce them. By choosing this rug, you are preserving a heritage of artistry that has been passed down through generations of weavers.

This piece is expertly hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and precision. By individually tying each knot onto the cotton foundation, the artisans ensure that the pattern remains sharp and the pile stays dense and uniform, resulting in a finished product that is built to last for generations.

With a density of 360,000 knots per m2, the creation of this rug represents hundreds of hours of focused, manual labour. This level of complexity is what gives the rug its exceptional durability and fine detail, as the high knot count allows for the intricate floral designs to be rendered with clarity and grace.

The total weight of 2.9 kg for this 85 x 68 cm piece serves as a clear indicator of its solid construction and the generous amount of high-quality wool used in its pile. This weight contributes to the rug's ability to lie flat and remain stable, reflecting the substantial and honest effort invested by the craftspeople who brought it to life.
