Hamadan ShahrbafHand KnottedRug

Dark pink / Black206 x 318 cm

The Hamadan region in the Middle East is one of the oldest and most prolific centres for rug production. Shahrbaf rugs, in particular, represent a refined lineage within this tradition, often distinguished by their superior Wool quality and more sophisticated, city-influenced designs compared to the simpler village weaves found elsewhere in the area.

The term Shahrbaf implies a level of urban refinement, where the weavers adhere to more complex patterns and tighter knotting techniques. This evolution in craft allows for the intricate floral arrangements and sharp, defined borders that you see in this piece, separating it from more rustic, tribal styles through its dedication to precision and aesthetic balance.

Signature elements of this tradition include a central medallion surrounded by lush, flowing floral patterns and vines. The use of a deep blue field is a classic choice, providing a perfect backdrop for the vibrant red and contrasting lighter tones in the motifs. This colour palette is deeply rooted in the region's artistic history, designed to create a sense of harmony and depth.

Owning a Hamadan Shahrbaf is an investment in cultural heritage. Collectors value these rugs for their ability to bridge the gap between traditional craft and elegant interior design. By bringing one into your home, you are not only acquiring a beautiful floor covering but also participating in a long-standing legacy of human skill and artistic expression.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that requires immense patience and precision. With a density of 250,000 knots per m2 across its 318 x 206 cm size, this piece contains approximately 163,800 total knots. Such a high count represents months of dedicated work by skilled artisans, ensuring the structural integrity and design clarity that characterise a piece of this calibre.

The substantial weight of 22.9 kg is a testament to the quality and volume of the materials used in its construction. This weight indicates a dense, robust foundation that is built to last, reflecting the significant human effort invested in every square centimetre to create a product that balances beauty with enduring strength.
