HamadanHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black109 x 213 cm

The Hamadan region in the Middle East is one of the oldest and most prolific rug-weaving centres in the world. Located in the high plateaus of the region, the area has long been a hub for nomadic and village weavers who have passed down their design sensibilities through generations, creating a distinct aesthetic that is recognised by collectors globally.

The term Hamadan refers to a wide variety of rugs produced in the city and hundreds of surrounding villages. These rugs are celebrated for their sturdy construction and the use of high-quality Wool, which is often sourced from local mountain sheep. The resilience of these materials ensures that the rugs develop a beautiful character as they age, becoming even more cherished over time.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their bold use of colour and geometric floral interpretations. While many feature a classic central medallion, the surrounding field is often filled with stylized blossoms, vines, and shrubs. This specific piece showcases a harmonious blend of red and blue tones, reflecting the traditional colour palettes favoured by village weavers for centuries.

Owning a piece from this tradition is an opportunity to connect with a rich cultural history. These rugs are valued not just for their decorative potential, but for the skill and heritage they represent. By bringing this rug into your home, you are preserving a craft tradition that remains a testament to human creativity and the enduring appeal of handmade artistry.

This rug is crafted using the traditional hand-knotted technique, a process that requires immense skill and patience. Each individual knot is tied by hand onto a cotton foundation, ensuring a secure and long-lasting structure that holds the pile firmly in place.

Given its generous size of 213 x 109 cm and significant weight of 8.1 kg, this rug represents a substantial investment in material and human effort. The weight is a direct indicator of the dense, high-quality construction, reflecting the many hours of dedicated work required by artisans to complete each section of the pattern.

The precision of the hand-knotted work allows for the detailed floral motifs and clear borders that define this piece. This methodical approach to production ensures that the rug is not only a beautiful decorative element but also a robust, high-performing floor covering built to endure for years to come.
