GholtoghHand KnottedRug

Black / Brown128 x 197 cm

Gholtogh rugs originate from a specific village tradition in the Middle East, a region celebrated for its long-standing history of textile arts. These rugs are highly regarded for their robust construction and the way they blend local weaving customs with a distinct visual language that has been passed down through generations of artisans.

The term hand-knotted refers to the practice of tying individual pieces of Wool yarn onto the warp foundation. This labour-intensive technique is what defines the quality of a Gholtogh, as it allows for the creation of intricate, durable designs that are far superior to those produced by machines. It is a craft that demands deep knowledge of tension, symmetry, and material behaviour.

Visually, these rugs are often defined by their bold medallion structures and decorative borders that frame the central field. The patterns frequently draw from a vocabulary of tribal and geometric motifs, often rendered in deep, earthy tones that reflect the natural dyes and regional aesthetics of their origin. Each rug acts as a canvas for the weaver's interpretation of these classic designs.

Collectors value Gholtogh rugs for their authenticity and the window they offer into a specialised craft tradition. Owning one is more than a design choice; it is an act of preserving a cultural legacy, as these pieces embody the skill, history, and patient dedication of the weavers who created them.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate countless hours to ensuring the precision of every single stitch. The process is a testament to traditional craft, requiring a high level of technical skill and patience to build the rug knot by knot from the foundation upwards.

With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, this piece demonstrates a significant commitment to detail and quality. For a rug of this size, this level of density requires months of focused, manual labour, resulting in a firm, dense pile that is far more durable and resistant to wear than rugs made using mechanised methods.

The substantial weight of 6.3 kg is a direct result of the high-quality materials and the density of the construction. This weight ensures the rug lies flat and remains stable on your floor, serving as a clear indicator of the generous amount of material and the intensive human effort invested in its creation.
