Gabbeh - A Vibrant Expression of Colour

This stunning, one-of-a-kind Gabbeh rug features a rich, striped landscape of colour. Hand-knotted with care, it brings warmth and artistic character to any space in your home.
This Gabbeh rug serves as a striking centrepiece, showcasing a bold, horizontal striped design that draws inspiration from the natural landscapes of the Middle East. The interplay of vibrant greens, earthy browns, deep reds, and soft blues creates a rich, textured appearance that feels both grounding and lively underfoot.
Crafted from high-quality Wool, this piece offers a soft, plush tactile experience. At 23 mm thick, it provides excellent sound absorption and a comfortable, cushioned feel that makes it an ideal addition to a cosy living room or a quiet study area.
As a one-of-a-kind creation, this rug is truly singular. The variation in the bands of colour and the subtle, organic transitions between them ensure that no two rugs are identical. Owning this piece means you have a work of art that will never be replicated, reflecting a distinct sense of style and personal expression.
Beyond its visual appeal, the Wool construction offers natural durability and warmth, making it a functional choice for everyday life. Its generous size provides ample coverage, allowing the colours to anchor your room while inviting you to enjoy the comfort and quality of a genuine hand-knotted rug.
Gabbeh rugs originate from the nomadic tribes of the Middle Eastern mountains, where they were traditionally woven for personal use rather than commercial sale. These rugs were designed to be thick and warm, serving as essential bedding and floor coverings for families living in harsh, high-altitude climates.
The term 'Gabbeh' itself translates roughly to 'raw' or 'natural,' reflecting the rug's historical roots in simplified, unrefined aesthetics. Unlike the more formal, intricate carpets produced in urban workshops, these rugs celebrate a freer, more spontaneous approach to design that emphasises the weaver's intuition and local traditions.
Signature design elements of traditional Gabbeh rugs often include large, open fields of colour and abstract, geometric motifs. While many older pieces were left in their natural, undyed Wool colours, modern iterations like this one often incorporate vibrant, hand-dyed palettes that pay homage to the rich landscape and tribal heritage of the region.
Owning a Gabbeh is a connection to a long-standing tradition of nomadic artistry. These rugs are highly valued by collectors for their simplicity, bold use of colour, and the human story woven into every thread. They are not merely floor coverings, but durable artefacts of a cultural legacy that prioritises both function and artistic expression.
This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and skill. By individually tying each knot, the artisans ensure that the resulting pile is dense, resilient, and capable of maintaining its structure and beauty for years to come.
The 15 kg weight of this 188 x 151 cm rug is a testament to the significant amount of Wool used in its construction. This density not only contributes to the rug’s substantial, premium feel but also reflects the hundreds of hours of human effort invested in its creation.
The precision of the hand-knotting process is what allows for the smooth, evocative colour transitions seen across the surface. This level of craftsmanship transforms raw materials into a durable floor covering that stands as a clear example of traditional artistry and quality.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
