Gabbeh ModernHand KnottedRug

Brown / Light greenRunner74 x 341 cm

Gabbeh rugs originate from the nomadic traditions of tribal weavers in the Middle East, particularly regions like Afghanistan and southwestern Iran. Traditionally created by women for domestic use rather than trade, these pieces were designed primarily for warmth and daily comfort inside family tents, resulting in thick, resilient piles and deeply personal designs.

The word gabbeh translates to raw, natural, or uncut in Persian, which reflects the unpretentious nature of these traditional floor coverings. Over time, the style evolved from simple, tribal field patterns into modern interpretations that maintain the same håndknyttede integrity while fitting comfortably into contemporary homes.

Unlike formal carpets with elaborate floral medallions, traditional Gabbeh design relies on minimalist fields, subtle abrash colour shifts, and abstract stripes or blocks of colour. This particular runner features horizontal bands of varied tones, showcasing the natural variations of hand-dyed wool yarns arranged in spontaneous, unscripted sequences.

Collecting a Gabbeh runner connects your living space to a long lineage of nomadic craft and storytelling. Owning a piece crafted by hand means preserving ancient weaving methods, where every knot reflects the patience, skill, and cultural heritage of the artisan who made it.

This rug is entirely handmade through traditional hand-knotted techniques in Afghanistan, representing weeks and months of careful human labor. Artisans individually tie each of the 227,103 knots across the 341 x 74 cm surface, building the dense 8 mm pile row by row.

Weighing 8.6 kg, this runner uses a substantial amount of natural material combined with a compact knot density of 90,000 knots per m2. This high concentration of knots and solid weight reflect the considerable time and precision invested in its creation, ensuring a sturdy foundation and sharp visual detail.
