Gabbeh ModernHand KnottedRug

Brown / Orange196 x 286 cm

Gabbeh rugs trace their roots to the nomadic tribes of the Middle East, particularly the Qashqai and related pastoral groups who originally wove them for their own daily use as sleeping mats and heavy floor coverings. Unlike formal court carpets, traditional Gabbehs were spontaneous expressions of tribal life, often featuring minimalist fields inspired by the surrounding landscape, local flora, and everyday observations.

The word Gabbeh translates simply to raw, natural, or uncut, which speaks directly to the honest and unpretentious character of these textiles. Traditionally woven using hand-spun wool and dyed with natural materials like roots, leaves, and plants, each piece carries subtle variations in tone that give the wool a vibrant, living depth.

The design of this particular rug reflects the Gabbeh tradition of simplified visual storytelling, where linear bands and subtle colour transitions take centre stage without heavy ornamentation. This restrained approach allows the natural qualities of the wool to shine through, creating a calm backdrop that complements contemporary living spaces.

Owning a modern Gabbeh connects your home to an enduring heritage of nomadic craft. It represents a tradition where patience and practical utility meet, offering a meaningful connection to handmade artistry that stands apart from mass-produced floor coverings.

This rug is entirely handmade through traditional hand-knotted techniques, reflecting a remarkable level of human time and skill. Weaving a piece of this size requires months of careful, steady work by a skilled artisan who places every single knot by hand.

The 90,000 knots per m2 density demands exceptional precision, ensuring the wool pile is packed tightly for lasting durability and a refined finish. Combined with a total weight of 19.1 kg, the high material density points to a solidly built piece crafted to stay in your family for years.

The slow, deliberate hand-knotting process allows for precise control over the texture and structure. This careful method results in a resilient foundation and a rich, substantial feel that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match.
