Gabbeh ModernHand KnottedRug

Orange / Brown164 x 241 cm

Gabbeh rugs trace their roots to the nomadic tribes of the Zagros Mountains, where weavers traditionally created thick, plush floor coverings for daily family life. Over generations, this heritage evolved into a distinct style celebrating minimalist fields and abstract storytelling through simple geometric motifs.

The term Gabbeh itself translates to raw or natural, reflecting an aesthetic that values unpretentious beauty and direct connection to traditional materials. While originally woven for personal use by nomadic families, these pieces have found a permanent place in contemporary homes for their unforced charm.

Unlike formal oriental carpets with intricate floral medallions, Gabbeh designs rely on sparse graphic elements, broad colour fields, and primitive motifs. The linear patterns seen here reflect a long-standing tradition of translating everyday observations of nature into visual rhythm.

Owning a hand-knotted Gabbeh connects your home to a rich lineage of tribal craftsmanship. It represents a tradition where patience and local knowledge take precedence over mass production, offering a lasting piece of cultural heritage for daily living.

Crafted entirely by hand, this rug represents a significant investment of time and human skill by traditional artisans. The meticulous hand-knotted technique ensures that each strand is securely placed, resulting in a durable and resilient structure.

Weighing 13.4 kg across a 241 x 164 cm format, the substantial construction reflects the dense amount of natural material packed into the foundation. Producing a piece of this scale and density requires months of focused labour by skilled weavers.

The precise knot count of 90,000 knots per m2 contributes directly to the crispness of the geometric pattern and the longevity of the pile, ensuring a piece built to last for generations.
