Beige / Yellow249 x 300 cm

India has a long and storied history of rug weaving, deeply influenced by the arrival of weaving traditions from the Middle East in the 16th century. Over the centuries, Indian artisans have refined these techniques, blending local artistic sensibilities with global design trends to create a unique aesthetic that is recognised worldwide.

The term hand-knotted refers to the classic method of securing the pile to the foundation. Artisans knot the Wool around the warp threads one by one, a process that is far more time-consuming than other methods but results in a rug of unparalleled strength and longevity. This technique allows for complex patterns and a high degree of detail that highlights the artistry involved in every piece.

This specific design draws on the concept of the medallion, a central motif that has been a hallmark of rug design for generations. Traditionally representing a garden or the universe, the medallion provides a focal point that anchors a room. In this modern interpretation, the motif is stylised and radiating, showing how traditional forms can be reimagined for contemporary living spaces.

Choosing a handmade rug from India is an investment in cultural heritage and skilled labour. These rugs are collected not only for their visual appeal but for the story of the hands that created them. By selecting a piece with this lineage, you are supporting a craft tradition that has been passed down through families, ensuring that these skills continue to thrive in the modern world.

This piece is entirely hand-knotted, a traditional craft that requires immense patience and skill. By tying each individual knot by hand, the artisan ensures a level of precision and structural integrity that provides superior durability and a refined, sharp appearance to the pattern.

With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, this rug represents a significant investment of labour. Given the size of 300 x 249 cm, this total knot count translates to approximately 1.87 million hand-tied knots. Such a high density creates a substantial, dense pile that is resistant to wear and maintains its form beautifully over time.

The weight of 29.9 kg is a testament to the generous amount of high-quality Wool used in the construction. This density not only contributes to the rug's longevity but also provides a grounded, stable feel on the floor. The combination of intense labour and material quality results in a finished product that is built to withstand daily life while retaining its aesthetic appeal.
