China Antique PekingHand KnottedRug

Black / Brown158 x 244 cm

The tradition of Chinese rug weaving is ancient, yet the specific style known as Peking rugs reached a height of refinement during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These rugs are celebrated for their distinctive use of negative space, where the field is not crowded with pattern but instead allows individual floral or symbolic motifs to breathe. This approach reflects a broader Chinese artistic philosophy that values balance, restraint, and harmony.

Antique Peking rugs are often characterised by their signature blue and ivory palettes, though they can also feature softer earth tones. The term 'Peking' refers to the sophisticated workshops in and around the capital, which produced these rugs for both domestic use and export. The technical construction of these pieces often utilises a sturdy foundation that supports the fine, soft wool pile, resulting in a rug that feels both substantial and luxurious.

The motifs found on this rug, such as stylised blossoms and floral sprays, are deeply rooted in Chinese culture. These patterns are rarely just decorative; they often carry symbolic meanings related to longevity, prosperity, and the changing seasons. The formal borders, which often feature repetitive floral or geometric elements, serve to frame the central field, providing a sense of structure and completion to the overall design.

Collectors value these antique rugs for their rarity and the historical window they provide into a bygone era of craftsmanship. Owning an antique piece like this is an act of preservation, keeping alive techniques and aesthetic traditions that have evolved over centuries. It represents a connection to the heritage of the Middle East and East Asian textile arts, making it a meaningful addition to any collection.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a traditional process that requires immense patience and skill. Each individual knot is tied by hand, reflecting a level of craftsmanship that creates a dense and resilient pile. This labour-intensive method is what gives the rug its lasting quality and ensures it can withstand the rigours of time while retaining its intricate design details.

With a total weight of 13.5 kg, this rug carries a substantial quality that speaks to the premium materials and the density of its construction. The weight is a direct result of the effort invested by the artisan, ensuring that the rug stays firmly in place while providing a luxurious, cushioned feel. This investment in manual labour is the hallmark of a high-quality, authentic piece.
