China 90 LineHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black60 x 90 cm

Chinese rug weaving has a storied tradition that spans centuries, deeply rooted in the artistic and cultural heritage of the region. Traditionally, these rugs were influenced by broader East Asian aesthetics, often incorporating symbolic motifs like peonies and lotus flowers that represent prosperity and grace. Over time, these designs evolved to incorporate softer, more naturalistic floral arrangements, reflecting the refined taste of their origins.

The term '90 Line' refers to a specific traditional metric used in Chinese rug production to describe the density of the weave. This terminology is a hallmark of the craft, signifying a standard of precision that ensures the patterns are well-defined and the pile remains dense and resilient. Understanding this technical aspect allows one to appreciate the skill required to maintain such uniformity across the entire surface of the rug.

The visual language of this tradition is defined by its balanced compositions and harmonious use of space. In this piece, the central floral medallion is framed by a decorative border, a layout that provides a sense of structure and elegance. The use of a deep blue field is a classic choice, chosen for its ability to anchor a room while allowing the softer, muted tones of the floral elements to stand out with clarity.

Collecting rugs from this tradition is an investment in cultural history and human skill. Because each rug is finished by hand, it carries the unique signature of the artisan, making it a piece that is cherished for its provenance and lasting quality. Owning such a rug is a way to celebrate a legacy of craft that continues to bring beauty and warmth into contemporary homes.

This rug is carefully hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate significant time and effort to every individual piece. The process begins with securing the foundation, followed by the precise placement of each knot by hand. This labour-intensive method is what gives the rug its exceptional durability and the sharp, clear definition of its floral pattern.

The quality of this craft is evidenced by the weight of 2.7 kg across its 90 x 60 cm dimensions. This density is the result of using high-quality materials and a construction method that prioritises longevity and substance. By avoiding shortcuts, the artisans ensure that the final product is not only a visual pleasure but a sturdy, reliable addition to your home that will stand the test of time.
