China 90 LineHand KnottedRug

Beige / Dark blue60 x 90 cm

Chinese rug weaving holds a storied place in history, with traditions that date back centuries. These rugs are renowned for their distinctive use of negative space and sculptural pile, which creates a three-dimensional effect that brings motifs to life. Historically, these pieces were reserved for the elite and were often used in imperial courts, reflecting a culture that highly values precision and artistic expression.

The term '90 Line' refers to the traditional method of measuring the density of the weave. This technical specification is crucial because it dictates the clarity of the pattern and the longevity of the rug. A specific line count ensures that the pile is dense enough to hold its shape under foot traffic while allowing the intricate floral designs to remain sharp and vibrant over time.

The visual language of Chinese rugs often centres on natural themes, particularly flowers and botanical elements, which carry deep symbolic meaning. The use of a central medallion surrounded by floral borders is a classic design choice that helps to ground the space. In this particular piece, the choice of a bold blue field provides a modern backdrop for the more traditional, soft-toned floral motifs, creating a balanced and harmonious aesthetic.

Owning a hand-knotted rug from this tradition is about more than just decoration; it is about preserving a legacy of skill. These pieces are valued by collectors for their blend of durability and artistic beauty. By choosing this rug, you are acquiring a piece of cultural history that has been shaped by human hands and refined through generations of practice.

This rug is created through a dedicated hand-knotted process that requires significant patience and skill. By securing each strand of Wool individually to the foundation, the artisans ensure a level of structural integrity and pile density that mass-produced alternatives simply cannot match.

With a weight of 2.7 kg packed into its 90 x 60 cm frame, this rug demonstrates a high degree of material density. This weight is a direct indicator of the volume of Wool used and the intensive labour required to build such a substantial, long-lasting item, confirming its status as a premium piece of craft.

The precision involved in the hand-knotted technique allows for the crisp, clean lines of the floral patterns seen on the surface. This level of detail is the result of countless hours of focused work, ensuring that the finished rug is not only visually stunning but also physically robust enough to withstand daily use.
